Project: Bridges To Work, InterAct,
Waltham Abbey
Funding: ESF [Category 1d]
When Charles was first referred, he had very low esteem and looked
much older than his 57 years. He would sometimes fall asleep at the computer
and seemed to lack motivation. He struggled to attend. During a regular personal
review, we learned more about his love of art and the fact that he used to
work for Saatchi and Saatchi.
Whilst attending he gained respect for his skills from staff, volunteers and our clients and this was the beginning of Charles feeling he could move on. His attendance and punctuality were excellent.
“I had to be encouraged to join B2W a year ago because, at the time, I didn’t want to know about computer studies at all. Suffering from a prolonged bout of manic depression, my mind seemed stuck at the bottom of a deep dark pit.
Two volunteer positions, with a possible third and a major commission to produce a piece of public art early next year, coupled with personal art projects and a possible exhibition in Harlow, now keep me occupied.“

Joy is recovering from a long period of anxiety following her divorce.
She is busy caring for her four young children but determined to train and
move on.
Joy has undertaken IT training and learned other more diverse skills such as plastering and other DIY skills. Once her confidence grew, Joy started to volunteer at the local charity shop.
Attending an Employment Preparation Course Joy also received one to one training to improve her English and writing skills. She then began applying for jobs.
Now working for Essex County Council as a Relief Community Support Facilitator, Joy has a job close to home with a pension. Her personal life has settled with a supportive relationship with her ex-husband.
Joy really has been a joy to know and the future is certainly much improved.

Project: Heading To Work, MENCAP,
Essex
Funding: ESF
Traditionally employment has not been an option for people who attend special schools. More recently some work-based opportunities have been offered to some pupils. It’s a form of institutional discrimination – you’ve got a learning disability so you can’t get a job. ‘Heading to Work’ is a new ESF project that plans to tackle this by offering work-based opportunities to 250 14-19 year olds in Essex.
